At Eugenio Maria de Hostos Charter School (EMHCS), many of our classrooms are staffed with more than one teacher. Our vision is if a child cannot learn the way we teach, then we will learn to teach the way the child can learn. EMHCS offers different services for students that might be struggling with learning. Special Education Services
EMHCS offers Consultant Teacher services for ELA and Math. Services are provided by one of our 5 full time Special Education teachers. We also provide Speech, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Counseling, Deaf/Hard of Hearing Services, Audiology Services, and Assistive Technology Services.
EMHCS has adopted the Response to Intervention (RTI) model to ensure that all of our students’ needs are met. Reading, Math and Behavior intervention services are available to all students who require additional support. RTI is rigorous implementation of high quality, culturally and linguistically responsive instruction; assessment; and evidence-based interventions. Comprehensive RTI implementation helps us to better identify learning and behavioral issues, improve instructional quality, provide all students with the best opportunities to succeed in school, and assist with the identification of learning disabilities and other disabilities.
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a Federal civil rights statute that guarantees the rights of disabled individuals to equal opportunity in school programs and activities. A student is eligible if they have an impairment that affects their learning. Eligibility is based on multiple sources of evaluations that may include medical reports, achievement tests, teacher information, work samples, etc. Once the eligibility criteria are met the school 504 team and parent/guardian will meet to develop an accommodation plan based on the student's needs.
